baby fireguard sizing guide

1. To Start :

Measure your hearth's width and depth in cm, and the distance from the heat source i.e how far is it from the front of the fire to the edge of the hearth. You are going to match up your heaths width and depth-first to the closest size.

hearth width & depth

2. Now Choose a Neat Size :

  • The sizing table on each product detail page gives the inside dimensions of each size in Width & Depth as well as the individual segments included.
    • It’s a 5 segment fireguard, so normally its 3 panels across the width (30cm + 90 gate +30cm) The sum of the 3 panels across the front makes your width ( i.e. 30cm + 90 gate + 30cm = 150cm width)  and the outside panels makes your depth. Most sizes have 2 configurations as the panels can be swapped around each side of the gate.
    • Every panel rotates and locks in place at the angle you choose so you can adjust the width the brackets are fit. This is also sometimes desirable for stability on sizes in excess of 150cm wide as this shape is more stable on the floor.
    • The brackets add an additional 5cm depth.
      • Our fireguard is designed to be taken up and down every day without fuss. So if you're concerned about the space it takes up just remember that it can be taken up and down in around 60 seconds!
      • Choose the size the most closely matches your hearths width and depth for the neatest fit. Remember there are 3 panels across the front  - panel + 90cm gate + panel, this will match up your width. Then, a panel on each side to make up your depth.
      • note: you can increase the width/depth of the guard further than the standard preset sizes by adding extension. See the mnain category here

3.Not so fast...check these key variables before choosing:

      A) Ensure a safe fit & distance from the fire

      • Apart from keeping your child away from the hot fire – a  great benefit of our baby fireguard is that it prevents your child from the hard surface of the hearth/ plinth. You’re going to want to choose a size that sits outside the hearth – not on it, so your child cannot become injured on the hearth.

      • Overheating: We recommend thinking about the distance to the fire carefully. The baby fireguard should firstly not be close enough to the stove or fire that your child can reach through the vertical bars and touch the fire or stove from any side. Usually above 40cm is too far for a baby up to 2 years of age is enough. Furthermore, as fireguards are metal in construction, you should consider the possibility of the fireguard overheating on every panel both front and sides. Each fire/stove is different and the temperature from home to home can vary depending on the power of the stove and the strength of the fire as well as the length of time the fireguard is exposed to heat. As a precautionary measure in our instruction manual, we mention the distance from a stove should be 75cm, and the distance from an open fire should be 90cm. However, in many cases, this distance is not needed and is not even possible due to space limitations and in some situations, more than 75cm is required! It is the responsibility of the user to check the fireguard both initially and regularly to make sure the gate is not overheating. If you discover that your fireguard is becoming too hot stop using it immediately and look at extensions from Babasafe to increase the distance. Many parents do not use their fire at all and simply wish to protect from the sharp and hard corners of the hearth and fireplace and stove. Furthermore, the fireplace area can be a dusty and dirty area and parents may wish to simply block this area off. If this is the case, you may find that going for the closest size possible is fine provided the fire is not lit.

      B) Brackets:

      • Please note the brackets on each side add an extra 5 cm if required and can be fitted at various straight and 90 degree angles for example at the front or side of the chimney breast. Perfect if you do not have space on each side of your hearth on the front of the chimney breast. (Note: the bracket will fit at a 90-degree angle but not less than a 90 degree)

      • You must have at least 4.5cm space on each side of your hearth to fit the brackets plates. Some homes hearth’s are the same width as the chimney breast so this space is not available. In that case the brackets are designed to rotate so you can fit them at the side of the chimney breast but be sure your side panel can reach back far enough! This also increases your width requirements by 4.5cm each side.

      • The bracket mounts are 5cm deep,  4.5 wide cm x 43 high, and start are 34cm from the floor. So your skirting must not be higher than 34cm and cannot protrude more than 5cm….The same goes for things like gas valves or pipes etc.

      4. Finally…

      • Don’t worry our fireguard is configurable so later if you decide you need to make it larger or smaller extension are available from Babasafe at any point.

      • Custom sizing! If you find that non of our pre-set standard sizes suit you or you have an unusual hearth shape you can configure your own fireguard on our category page here and choose individual panels.
